Richard Rohr, OFM (born 1943) is an American Franciscan priest and author on spirituality[one] based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.[2] He was ordained to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church in 1970. PBS has called him "one of the well-nigh popular spirituality authors and speakers in the world".[3]
Life and ministry building [edit]
Rohr was built-in in Kansas in 1943. He received his Master of Theology degree in 1970 from the University of Dayton.[4] He entered the Franciscans in 1961 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970. Rohr founded the New Jerusalem Community[5] in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1971[vi] and the Center for Activeness and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New United mexican states, in 1986[7] [8] where he serves as founding manager and bookish dean of the Living School for Activity and Contemplation.[9] [x] The curriculum of Rohr's school is founded on seven themes adult by Rohr and explored in his book Yes, And.... [11]
In his 2016 book The Divine Dance, Rohr suggests that the pinnacle-downward hierarchy approach of western Christianity since Emperor Constantine has held ecumenical traditions back for centuries, and that the future of people of faith will have to exist awakening to a bottom-upwards approach.[12] Rohr maintains what he would call prophetic positions, on the "edge of the inside" of a church that he sees as failing to transform people, and and then increasingly irrelevant.[thirteen] [fourteen] In a critique of Rohr published in the New Oxford Review, Reverend Bryce Sibley writes that Rohr asserts that God holds both the masculine and the feminine together rather than either or binary dualistic thinking and criticizes ecumenical religious rituals that focus on rules rather than the paramount centrality of relationship with God, and neighbour.[xv]
In 2000, Rohr publicly endorsed Soulforce, an organization that challenges what they describe as faith-based LGBTQ oppression through nonviolent protestation.[xvi] In a 1999 essay, and afterwards, Rohr welcomes and affirms God's love for LGBTQ people, emphasizing that God asks the same of people in homosexual relationships equally God asks of heterosexual ones: "truth, faithfulness, and striving to enter into covenants of continuing forgiveness of one another".[17] [18]
In his education on scripture, such as in his volume Things Hidden, Rohr describes the biblical record as a human business relationship of humanity's evolving experience with God, "the word of God in the words of people".[19] Rohr's book Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self suggests Jesus' death and resurrection is an archetypal pattern for the individual'southward move from "false self" to "true cocky", from "who you think you are" to "who yous are in God".[20] Rohr's 2014 book Eager to Love explores the key themes of Franciscan spirituality, which he sees as a "3rd way" between traditional orthodoxy and heresy, a way of focusing on the Gospel, justice, and compassion.[21]
Rohr emphasizes "culling orthodoxy", a term the Franciscan tradition has applied to itself, referring to a focus on "orthopraxis"—a belief that lifestyle and practice are much more important than mere verbal orthodoxy,[22] which he feels is much overlooked in Cosmic preaching today.[23] [24] Co-ordinate to Rohr's teachings, a person does non have to follow Jesus or practices of tenets of any formal faith to come past salvation, rather merely have to "fall in love with the divine presence, under whatever name" which, he says, is welcomed by people who are disillusioned with the conservative churches which preaches that nonbelievers would go to Hell.[25] The Perennial Tradition,[26] or Perennial Philosophy, forms the basis of much of Rohr's teaching; the essential bulletin of his work focuses on the matrimony of divine reality with all things and the human potential and longing for this matrimony. Rohr and other 21st-century spiritual leaders explore the Perennial Tradition in the Heart for Action and Contemplation's issue of the publication Oneing.[27]
Influences on Rohr exterior of Christian sources include Buddhism and Hinduism, Gandhi, Carl Jung, Spiral Dynamics, and Integral Theory.[xi]
[edit]
Co-ordinate to Douglas Groothuis, professor of philosophy at Denver Seminary, Rohr is basing his teachings on Eastern mysticism rather than biblical Christianity by preaching to find our "true self" instead of knowing a savior distinct from the self.[28] Groothuis argues that Rohr's central claims well-nigh the "universal Christ" and Pantheistic worldview subvert the "biblical worldview with nearly egregious errors", he adds, Rohr manipulates the scriptures to support his pantheistic or panentheistic worldviews, rather than monotheism i.e. creation and creator or God are different entities with infinite separation according to Christian theology, withal Rohr contradicts this doctrine, states Groothuis. Groothuis farther says that the writings of Rohr parallel New Age christologies which, he says, misread the biblical texts. Rohr's reference to cosmos as the first incarnation of "the universal Christ" was highly criticized by Groothuis who argues that this contradicts the biblical doctrine. Groothuis says that Rohr distorts the gospel since his emanational metaphysics is based on perennial tradition.[29]
Erwin Lutzer, an evangelical pastor, has criticized Rohr for promoting universalism and a New Age spirituality which eschews specific doctrines and basic biblical education. Regarding Rohr'due south book The Divine Dance, Lutzer says the volume "is not about the Trinity, but rather Rohr imaginatively uses Trinitarian language in order to give a backdrop to his ain eclectic spiritual teaching".[30]
William P. Young, a Christian author, has commented on Rohr's ideas, saying that people who are frustrated with their churches might misread Rohr's works as advocating a vague spirituality which is disconnected from the orthodox and scriptural understanding of Christ. According to Young, "The danger of universalism is zip matters, peculiarly Jesus". He adds that "Some of Rohr'due south followers can read it that way". Furthermore, Rohr shares an incident where a group of local Catholics secretly recorded his sermons to have him excommunicated. They delivered the tapes to the belatedly Primal Joseph Bernardin, then Archbishop of Cincinnati, who reviewed them and determined that they were within the bounds of the Church's teachings.[25]
