Can the Wd My Book Hard Drive Be Replaced?
Im planning to replace the hard drives on my WD My Volume World Edition Ii .
Ive bought the WD Caviar Scarlet to replace the current hard drive. just when i opened the enclosure, i see that the electric current disk inside is WD Caviar Green.
My question is.
Will in that location be any effects if i put in the WD Caviar Red within the enclosure instead of replacing it with a WD Caviar Green ?
someone did mentioned to me that i might screw upwardly the board, another said equally long as its a WD drive. then its ok.
Any suggestions ?
Give thanks You :)

While I've never done this before, I can't imagine why the make would even matter unless the enclosure is doing something special.
anyways, i'ce tried putting the deejay in for one day, and and then far everything is ok .
Just curious, considering i got some various inputs from a few people. so i idea i might as the customs here, if anyone had
encounter this state of affairs before ?
Thanks :)
From Western Digital'south website.
I downloaded the specifications sheet for the drives.

It seems the RED drives is consuming lower power compared to the GREEN drives.
So i approximate there shouldn't be whatsoever problem with replacing the GREEN with the Ruby-red then.
I would suspect information technology's really the other way around- unless they're shutting off the REDs for longer periods than the GREENs, in which example that sounds like an even better reason to avert them in anything more than than a consumer device (low cease desktops, portable cases, etc). Replacing a green with a red shouldn't make one flake of departure, as both will take WD serial numbers and volition more than probable merely be detected by make if any detection happens at all- your device is literally just a sata -> usb bridge, which is unremarkably about the dumbest device (dumb every bit in simple, no logic checks, etc) available. Usually that level of checking doesn't fifty-fifty start until the consumer form NAS devices, and even then it doesn't usually occur on the depression-cease ones.
Thanks for the info Magnus, I didn't know that.
Thanks for the information Magnus369.
Just to chinkle in a fiddling, I was unaware of the RED's being out but I exercise know WHY the NAS says green only.
It was likely fabricated earlier the RED was introduced.
Greens are low RPM cool running drives, because your NAS has poor ability to cool itself they dont want a drive put in that runs hot.
And so a desktop loftier RPM bulldoze similar the Black line would over heat the NAS.
Since the Ruby-red is built with NAS in listen, its cool running low RPM low amp draw, I would think it would be a expert bet if not a improve way than the Green.
I was looking to purchase the WD My Book World Edition II myself. This model is white with blueish rings. It is the stock 1tb model. I would similar to replace/upgrade the HDs in this model. Equally everyone knows, 1tb is not a lot of space nowadays. I have a few questions:
i. What is the procedure for replacing/upgrading the hard drives?
2. In one case I supplant the drives, how exercise I perform a manufactory reset?
3. It appears I would buy the WD Greenish Caviar drives. Right?
4. The USB port on the dorsum of this model, tin I connect information technology to a computer and apply it as an external drive?
The USB port on the back tin can exist used to add a USB bulldoze, either every bit a dorsum up for the NAS or as additional unprotected (non-RAID) storage capacity. The new drive will evidence up as 'USB1' or something like. Only plug it in......
Don't know if you can use it to connect directly to the estimator.

While I've never done this before, I tin can't imagine why the brand would even matter unless the enclosure is doing something special.

At that place are very few companies making SATA <-> USB translation chips so information technology'southward very hard to get a problem bridge these days.
WD cases are moderately OK, LaCie ones are cool.
P.S. IMHO :)
Simply curious if the upgrade was ever attempted and/or successfully completed? If so, what procedure did you follow? Did you have to manually copy over all your data?
