Good Designs Easy to Make Unkrainen Designs
Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives, whether or not we are aware of it, and can also be inspiring, empowering and enlightening" .
Good design is so much more than creating a good-looking product. It is about creating a positive experience for users at every touch point and with every interaction. Design influences what we think, the way we feel and the decisions we make. And when it is exceptionally well-done, good design is virtually invisible. We don't think about the creative effort or thought process that leads up to the final product. We simply know the experience is seamless and enjoyable. However, when we encounter something that is poorly designed, we can usually pinpoint its failings, and we'll go out of our way to avoid using that product, service or environment in the future.
Let's take a look at some products we interact with in our everyday lives. How can good design transform our interactions from mediocre to exceptional?
Take a look at this ergonomic chair for example. It looks pretty nice. It looks like it would be comfortable. And it's actually pretty easy to use –with very intuitive controls. Which is often hard to find in in other ergonomic chairs.
Here's an example of a thermostat which was purposefully designed to change the experience we have when heating or cooling our homes. It was designed to look high tech but also friendly. It promises to offer a comfortable interaction. And it's very intuitive to use. To make simple adjustments you just rotate the outer dial to turn the temperature up or down. It's very simple. Incidentally, this product won a Red Dot design award in 2012.
So if design places an important role in our everyday life, how does great design translate into the world of hearing healthcare?
As Unitron's design manager, I am responsible for redefining what great design can do for people who need to wear hearing aids. I view the conversations we have with hearing healthcare professionals, as well as current and potential wearers around the world, as an opportunity to design the experience with the end user in mind; to push our innovations further; evoke emotions and deliver the unexpected.
You see, good design is particularly important for hearing aids. At the end of the day, we are still designing a product that no person really wants. People continue to perceive hearing aids as something "old people" wear. They have a picture in their mind, reinforced by past experiences of large, bulky beige ones strapped to the back of the ear.
And yet, the hearing instruments we design today are dramatically different. People who wear hearing aids can now benefit from the same kind of good design and exceptional wearing experience they encounter with any other well-designed product. For the last five years, we've invested a tremendous amount of energy in designing the most beautiful, most comfortable, easy to use hearing instruments in the world to create the best wearer experience we can. That effort has been rewarded with international recognition. Unitron has won four consecutive Red Dot product design awards, and this year, Unitron's Moxi Now hearing instruments were named "best of the best" for product design - top honours on the world stage.
Good design doesn't happen by accident. At Unitron, our user-centric experience starts with a deep understanding of the people who interact with our brand, and how our products fit seamlessly into their everyday lives. It also means studying and drawing inspiration from well designed, everyday products -- from a Porsche 911 to an Apple iPhone, that represent the "best of the best" of good design.
That's why, when our teams talk about design, we talk about creating a holistic experience for both the hearing healthcare professional and the wearer. At the end of the day, we recognize that not only are our products an important part of a wearer's life, but that the hearing healthcare professional also needs to feel good about recommending and fitting our hearing instruments. This dedication to quality design is the driving force behind the innovations we develop at Unitron.
